Domains

A domain is the address that visitors, customers, and leads use to find your website, for example www.your-studio.com.

Every keinaufwand website is already available under a keinaufwand subdomain. From the admin panel, you'll find this address under Websites > All websites below the name of your website. As soon as your website is ready, you can connect it to your own domain.

Our support team connects domains for you. Contact our support team and we'll be happy to help.

Requirements

  • You already own a domain with a domain provider. keinaufwand doesn't sell domains.
  • You have access to your domain's DNS settings, or you know the person who manages your domain.

Connect a domain

  1. Email us at kontakt@keinaufwand.com with the name of your website and the domains you want to use, for example www.your-studio.com and your-studio.com. Tell us which one should be the primary domain.
  2. We add the domains to your website and tell you which DNS record (CNAME) you need to create with your domain provider.
  3. Sign in to your domain provider and open your domain's DNS settings.
  4. Create the record exactly as specified. Remove existing records (A, AAAA or CNAME) for the same name, for example from your previous website.
  5. Save the changes with your domain provider.

As soon as the record is active, an SSL certificate is issued for your domain automatically. Your website is then available encrypted via https://.

Important Only change the records we tell you about. Leave the records for your email (MX) unchanged so your email addresses keep working.

How long it takes

Changes to DNS records usually take effect within a few hours. Depending on your domain provider, it can take up to 48 hours. The SSL certificate is issued as soon as the DNS record has been detected. During this time, your website stays available under the keinaufwand subdomain.

Primary domain and redirects

If you connect several domains to your website, one of them is the primary domain:

  • The information for search engines (canonical URL) and the links from the admin panel to your website use the primary domain.
  • All other domains permanently redirect visitors to the primary domain. The path is kept, so your-studio.com/contact leads to www.your-studio.com/contact, for example.
  • The keinaufwand subdomain stays available.

If you later want to use a different domain as the primary domain or remove a domain, get in touch with our support team.

Domain without www

For the domain without www (for example your-studio.com), many domain providers don't allow a CNAME record. If your provider doesn't support an ALIAS or ANAME record either, connect www.your-studio.com as the primary domain and set up a redirect from your-studio.com to www.your-studio.com with your provider.

Troubleshooting

If your website still isn't available under your domain after 48 hours, or the browser shows a certificate warning, check the following:

  • The CNAME record is entered exactly as specified, without typos. Some providers automatically add your domain to the name. In that case, enter only www as the name.
  • There are no other A, AAAA or CNAME records for the same name.
  • The changes have been saved with your domain provider.

If the domain still doesn't work, contact our support team. We'll check the status of your domain's DNS record and SSL certificate and help you out.
